During the course of the 20th century, the ferries situated at Ballachulish on Loch Leven; at Dornie on Loch Long; and at Kyle of Lochalsh for those bound for the Isle of Skye, were all replaced by bridges.
The ancient ferry at Dornie was replaced by a toll-bridge in 1940. Ballachulish ferry was to follow in 1975.
The Kyle of Lochalsh ferry was made redundant when the Skye Bridge opened in 1995.
But, despite all this 'progress', one can still sail "over the sea to Skye" on the ferry from Glenelg!
The service operates seasonally from Easter to October

The GLENELG INN is owned and run by a local man, Christopher Main, who renovated the building in 1985 to the highest standards of comfort whilst ensuring the preservation of its traditional character.
Genial, friendly, hospitable and very much a "Home from Home", the inn has six Bedrooms, Morning Room, Dining Room and Bar and stands in its own extensive grounds in a spectacular situation overlooking Glenelg Bay and the Isle of Skye.
There are activities within easy reach of the Inn to suit all ages and interests- pony trekking, golf, fishing, birdwatching and hillwalking to name but a few.
Relax and unwind or get active. There is fabulous walking, wildlife, diving and sailing - our boats Gripper, Mary Doune and Eda Frandsen are the key. A holiday at Doune is unlike any other. Mountains, wildlife, tranquillity, marvellous food and stunning sunsets combine for a unique adventure and enduring memories.
Barisdale is a mountainous area. In this largely undisturbed environment, the visitor will see stunning views, an abundance of wildlife and precious examples of rare flora and fauna. It provides an excellent base for climbing the two munro's Ladhar Bheinn and Luinne Bheinn.
